This Weekend’s Declutter: The Kitchen

I continued my decluttering binge this weekend after taking a few weeks off to apartment hunt. I wasn’t looking forward to dealing with the kitchen because I thought it was be a huge under taking, but it was actually quite pleasant. We split up the decluttering and cleaning process into two days, otherwise it would’ve taken over four hours, which I wasn’t up for on a Sunday afternoon.

The biggest reason I wanted to declutter the kitchen was because the one we have right now is ridiculously spacious and I was concerned that we’d accumulated a lot of stuff over the past year, that wasn’t going to fit into the new place. On top of that, what’s the point of moving a bunch of stuff that we’ll eventually get rid of?

So we decluttered. I didn’t take many pictures because they just would’ve been a series of cupboard shots, but I did take a picture of the stuff we decided to get rid of. Most of these items will be going to the local goodwill store. Most of the items that we decided to donate were duplicates. Often times we just had too many of a single item, and they were redundant (we had 15 mugs) so some things had to go.

A Note About Food Waste

I’ve been practicing eliminating food waste for the past year. Nothing irks me more than throwing away perfectly good food simply because I wasn’t organized enough to eat it before it expired. So when I have to throw away food because it got pushed to the back of the cupboard and forgotten about, I hate it.

I did end up throwing away several food items that had gotten lost and then forgotten about, and it just reminded me to continue to be vigilant about our food usage and to make sure we use everything we buy. Otherwise we’re just throwing money into the garbage.

Only Two Rooms Left

We’ve been working on this decluttering program since early October, and the end is finally in sight! Here’s a snapshot of our progress so far:

The sunroom and the basement will both be pretty big projects, because they both have a lot of stuff in them, but they’ll have to wait until we get back from our trip to Paris. We also have two other little spaces that are going to be weeknight projects. One is a very small closet off the kitchen which houses dog food and cleaning supplies, and the other is the built-in bookcases in the dining room. They don’t warrant a full weekend, so they’re getting cleaned on weeknights.

The Results of Decluttering Are Starting to Show

I’ve really enjoyed this whole decluttering process, and now that we’re almost done, the results are becoming more apparent. The house certainly seems more orderly, less full of stuff, and is much, much easier to keep clean. Every room we’ve tackled is still just as decluttered as it was the weekend we tackled it, which is pretty amazing. I highly recommend taking the time to declutter your home – even if you’re just tackling a drawer or a closet – the results are worth it.

Did you get up to any decluttering this weekend? I want to know!
